Foolproof Outfit Combo: Crop Top + Full Skirt + Heels

Some outfit combinations are “foolproof” – i.e. the styling has been tried and tested time and again the look simply works.  I love this kind of outfit, even though the combo itself is nothing new, because you know it’s going to look good, and you can still put your own spin on it with the details.  I’m going to start posting these foolproof combos on a regular basis, and decided to start with a current fave.  The crop top/full skirt combo popped up a while back, and I’ve LOVED it ever since first spotting the look.  In fact, I remember styling a very similar look for myself as a pre-teen in the late 90’s, for my middle school graduation party!!  It was a giant midi length tutu skirt (in black) with a baby pink cropped tank and cardigan.  I remember my mother did not like the outfit, but I thought it was awesome, and definitely unique in my small suburban town.  Anyway, the look has been going strong, but I wouldn’t say it’s played out just yet.  Midi skirts and crop tops are still trending, and I’m not surprised because it’s easy to make these pieces work for you.  The key with a big, full midi skirt is to make sure it sits high on your waist at the narrowest part (typically above your belly button).  That way the skirt ensures waist emphasis and flares out from there, creating a nice curvaceous line for your lower body.  Equally as important, your crop top will not actually bare that much skin, because the skirt has you covered 😉 You don’t want more than a few inches of skin peeking out, and certainly not your belly button…Noooo low slung skirts with drop tops okay?!?  That’s not the modern (or decent) way to rock this silhouette. I always recommend topping off this look with heels (unless you’re super tall) because otherwise the midi skirt can stunt you, and of course heels are the more sexy, feminine choice.  Avoid an oversized bag with this look and stick to something ladylike and demure, like a mini bag or a minaudière.

A Little Bit Boho

DSC01830

My style isn’t super boho, but I do love flare and wide leg jeans, so I’m pretty thrilled they’re back in style this spring.  Truthfully, I wear them regardless, and as previously mentioned, I wayyyyy prefer flares over skinny jeans.  People tend to think that short girls shouldn’t wear wide leg jeans, but that’s totally bogus.  Yes, I usually have to have them hemmed to the right length, then I throw them on with wedges, and I actually look taller.  Here I styled a pair of high-waisted, wide leg 7 Jeans that I’ve owned for years.  I paired my jeans with a cropped fringe tank, a printed scarf, a floppy hat, a bucket bag, and of course wedge sandals.  Obviously I live in So Cal to be wearing this outfit right now!  All the elements come together in a way that’s fresh and modern, but of course with a nod to 70’s style.

Slouchy Pants With A Crop Top

I’m a huge proponent of experimenting with style!  I don’t believe in “playing it safe” and I love trying out different looks to suit my mood.  When I spotted these faux-leather slouchy pants (at Nordstrom Rack) I knew I had to have them, and because they’re slightly higher waisted, I figured they’d pair well with a crop top…DSC01590DSC01597DSC01601DSC01617DSC01625DSC01636

I love the addition of the sequined striped jacket to add a graphic element and incorporate different textures.  I knew I’d want to wear my Dolce Vita moto boots with these pants and the Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC provides just the right pop of color.  I was super stoked with how this outfit came together and couldn’t wait to wear it out.  I topped off the look with a pop of dark red (MAC Viva Glam) lipstick. I’m totally happy doing ladylike one day and sporty chic the next.  What do you think?  How do you like to experiment with your style??  Would love to hear your thoughts!  Xo
